Take a land plant and place it underwater show the students. Who believes this will be able to grow? Put students In groups. why do you think it will grow/ why not?. Have the students share. Now this is a water pennywort it lives in a pond just below the surface of the water. Does anyone want to change their mind?
Engagement:
On the board have students review the list from the previous class on the photosynthetic parts and functions on a terrestrial plant. The students break into jigsaw groups, each group has a different aspect of the photosynthetic process as it applies to the water plant that they research and share with the class.
Closure:
Groups present information to class and discuses their findings. Teacher polishes up student responses to prevent misconception. Teacher creates a summery of water plants then transitions to introduction to niches ie next topic
